Pierre Balmain was born in St. Jean de Maurienne, a small village near Aix-les-Bains, a popular resort in France’s Savoy Mountains, in 1914. His family ran a wholesale drapery company. Fracoise, his mother, worked at a store run by her two sisters. Balmain’s father died when he was only seven years old, and his fondest childhood memories are of him playing in the shop where his mother and aunts produced gowns. He experimented with materials and dreamed of becoming a couturier. Balmain studied architecture at Paris’ Ecole des Beaux Arts but did not complete his education. In his spare time, he designed dresses and showed them to Robert Piguet, who purchased three. He approached Molyneux, who agreed to give him a trial, and when he was accepted, he dropped out of his architectural studies. He worked for Molyneux from 1934 to 1939. He was called up for military service in 1936. When he finished this in 1939, he went to work for Lucien Lelong during the German occupation of Paris.
