The smell of moist leaves was Issey Miyake’s strongest childhood memory. But it wasn’t until 1992 that Issey Miyake, a Hiroshima survivor who was born in 1938, released his debut fragrance, L’Eau d’Issey. He relocated to Paris in 1965, where he worked for French designer Guy Laroche, because he was always interested by fashion. He moved to Givenchy in 1968, where he was given more freedom and, most significantly, more training. Issey Miyake returned to Japan after a brief stint in Paris with designer Geoffrey Beene. Issey Miyake dreamed of creating a collection using Japanese materials and techniques such as origami during his apprenticeship, so he returned to Japan. He established himself as a global leader and influencer, putting Tokyo on the fashion map.
